Quick Course: Photo Tips for Great Results

From BYU–Hawaii Photography Team

Best Times of Day to Take Photos

The best times of day to take photos are often referred to as the "golden hour" and "blue hour." These periods offer the most flattering and atmospheric natural lighting. However, since that’s not always possible, look for soft lighting like overcast or shade when shooting portraits to avoid harsh shadows and squinting eyes.

Golden Hour

Shortly After Sunrise and Before Sunset
Time: About 1 hour after sunrise and 1 hour before sunset.

Why it’s ideal:
  • Soft, warm, and diffused light.
  • Long shadows add depth and texture.
  • Sky colors are rich and vibrant.
  • Best for: Portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, nature.
